Summary:A prospective cross-sectional study determining prevalence of osteoporosis and osteopenia in 285 Filipino women utilizing bone densitometry measurements of the right calcaneus was conducted. The incidence of osteoporosis was 9.81% while for osteopenia, it was 46.0%. There was 40.7% prevalence of osteopenia in women below 40 years of age. Age and multiparity increased the risk for osteoporosis by 18% (OR 1.18, 95% CI 1.11–1.25) and 53% (OR 1.53, 95% CI 1.22–1.93). Increasing body weight OR 0.87 (95% CI 0.81–0.93) and body mass index OR 0.76 (95% CI 0.65–0.89) protect against osteoporosis.
