Description
Summary:To assess the caries level among schoolchildren in Azerbaijan. In this research an epidemiological examination of the oral health of 1275 schoolchildren in Azerbaijan in the key age groups - 6(n=256), 12(n=561) and 15(n=458) years, was conducted. During the epidemiological survey, the prevalence of dental caries and its intensity were studied. The schoolchildren were examined by calibrated dentists using WHO criteria lived in various regions of Azerbaijan. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Azerbaijan Medical University. Data collection tool was a pre-tested interviewer administered questionnaires and analysis was done with SPSS version 22. The study of prevalence of dental caries among schoolchildren showed that about 59.1±2.8% of children are susceptible to caries at the age of 6 years, 74.2±2.5% at the age of 12 years, and 77.2±2% at the age of 15 years. The study of carious damage intensity in permanent teeth has shown 1.29±0.07 affected teeth in 6-years-old children, 2.45±0.09 in 12-years-old, 3.15±0.09 in 15-years-old children. Analysis of the caries intensity index showed the presence of extracted permanent teeth in the amount of 0.01±0.01 in 6-years-old children, and 0.02±0.01 teeth in 12- and 15-years-old children; carious teeth in 6-years-old children - 0.75±0.04, 12-years-old - 1.38±0.05, 15-years-old - 1.83±0.05, filled teeth in 6-years-old were 0.53±0.05, 12-years-old - 1.09±0.07, 15-years-old - 1.30±0.07. Thus, the analysis of the prevalence of caries in permanent teeth of schoolchildren indicates a high level of the disease. Structural analysis of the intensity of caries indicates insufficient coverage of schoolchildren with dental care.
