Description
Summary:Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is known to be beneficial in surgical procedures such as socket preservation, sinus lifting, and closure of oroantral communication due to its ability to provide mechanical strength, release growth factors, and serve as a scaffold for growth factors and angiogenesis, thereby supporting wound healing. The aim of this study is to compare mechanical properties of fibrin structure obtained from patients using blood thinners with fibrin's from healthy patients. 10 patients were equally divided into two groups. Two tubes of blood were taken from each patient and centrifuged at 2700 rpm for 12 and 18 minutes in a 10 ml tabletop centrifuge. The obtained PRF was tested against shear forces using a rheometer device. Fibrin obtained from blood centrifuged for 12 minutes in both groups was found to be stiffer compared to the fibrin obtained from blood centrifuged for 18 minutes. When resistance to deformation was examined, the fibrins obtained from centrifugation for 18 minutes were found to be more resistant than those obtained from centrifugation for 12 minutes. Fibrins obtained from the control group were softer and more resistant than those obtained from the study group at both centrifugation times. These findings demonstrate that blood thinners may affect the mechanical properties of PRF. It's performance and strength may be altered based on the centrifugation protocol.
