Summary:In a constantly changing economic context, obsolescence has become a major challenge for many companies at all stages of the value chain. Obsolescence can take many forms and affect various sectors of the economy, with technological, environmental, economic and societal repercussions. Companies that succeed in anticipating and proactively managing obsolescence are better prepared to remain competitive in the marketplace. The aim of this article is to present the results of a survey of French manufacturers. Conducted in the form of a questionnaire, it provided an initial overview of manufacturers’ needs and requirements in terms of obsolescence management. This study shows the challenges faced by companies seeking to minimize obsolescence and its consequences, and explains the methods currently in use. The final ambition of this article is to propose niches for research and complementary work to be carried out by the various communities of scientists and practitioners.
