Description
Summary:•Motivation profiles tend to correspond with socioeconomic status.•Motivation profiles predict educational outcomes.•High Ability – Low Utility profile demonstrates the importance of utility value. Academic motivation and socioeconomic status are important predictors of educational milestones which portend future career and earning trajectories as well as a potential path out of poverty. This study used motivation variables from expectancy value theory and a person-oriented approach to explore how motivation profiles interact with socioeconomic status to predict high school math achievement, high school completion, and college enrollment using ELS:2002 data. Based on a large national sample of 10th grade students, six motivation profiles and SES quartiles were significant predictors of educational outcomes. Motivation profiles tend to correspond with SES quartiles, although one enigmatic profile, High Ability – Low Utility, emerged to demonstrate the importance of utility value in educational outcomes.
