Summary: | The hydrogen supply system (HSS) is an important part to ensure the efficient and reliable operation of fuel cells. As one of the key equipment of hydrogen supply system, the hydrogen circulation pump (HCP) has a significant impact on improving the utilization rate of hydrogen and the output characteristics of fuel cell stacks. Considering the function and operating conditions, this paper proposes the design requirements for HCPs. The principles and characteristics of several mechanical pumps that can be used for hydrogen circulation are introduced, including root pump, claw pump, vortex pump, and centrifugal pump. And the research progress and technical innovation of these four types of HCPs are summarized. Then, the control methods and purge strategies of the hydrogen supply system with an HCP are also summarized. And the performance parameter of HCP products in the current market is compared. Finally, the possible solutions are given to address some challenges faced by the actual operation of HCPs, including hydrogen safety issues, cold start at low temperature, leakage, vibration, and noise. This paper is helpful for researchers to understand the overall research progress of HCP and provide a reference for optimizing the performance and achieving more efficient hydrogen circulation.
