Description
Summary:•Coupled diffusion and deformation is studied in the framework of nonlinear membrane theory.•The model is derived as the leading order in thickness approximation to the three-dimensional theory.•An example involving axisymmetry illustrates the nonuniform swelling of the elastomer. [Display omitted] The mechanics of swelling and diffusion in fluid saturated elastomers has long interested workers in nonlinear elasticity theory. Here we broaden this subject by presenting a model for thin membranes, derived as the leading-order-in-thickness approximation to the three-dimensional theory.
