Summary: | The irregular echinoid Pygurus meslei Gauthier, 1896 is briefly described from the top part of the Antalo Limestone Formation exposed at Mugher (Blue Nile Basin, Ethiopia). The age of the urchin is constrained by calcareous nannofossils as Upper Tithonian. This is not only the first record of Pygurus meslei Gauthier, 1896 from Ethiopia but also the youngest, worldwide. Very briefly, the African records of Genus Pygurus are also enumerated, and a note on the paleobiogeographic distribution of the genus from the Jurassic deposits of Africa is also provided.
•Irregular echinoid Pygurus meslei Gauthier is described for the first time from Ethiopia.•Record comes from the top part of the Antalo Limestone Formation at Mugher (Blue Nile Basin).•The age is constrained by calcareous nannofossils as Upper Tithonian.•The African occurrences of Genus Pygurus are also enumerated. |
