Description
Summary:Carvacrol is a phenolic monoterpenoid found in the essential oil of the Lamiaceae family. Carvacrol has been applied in many studies, including food preservative and therapeutic applications, owing to its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anticancer activity. However, the poor solubility and stability of carvacrol limit its application. Nanotechnology is a suitable tool to overcome these limitations. Therefore, this review summarizes the development of carvacrol nano-based drug delivery systems for the food and pharmaceutical industries. Investigations of carvacrol loaded in nanoemulsions, microemulsions, nanoparticles, solid lipid nanoparticles, and liposomes are discussed. Furthermore, future perspectives for utilizing carvacrol nano-based drug delivery systems are presented. [Display omitted]
