Description
Summary:[Display omitted] •Carbon nano tubes (LCNT) and carbon microspheres(LCM) were prepared by floating catalytic chemical vapor deposition method.•LCNT and LCM were heated with alkali acid to obtain LCNT-Alk and LCM-Alk.•Prepared adsorbents were characterized by various techniques.•Evaluated for the removal of Toluene, Ethyl benzene and O-Xylene (TEX) from air.•Mesoporosity and high surface area responsible for higher adsorption capacity. Carbon microspheres (LCM) and nanotubes (LCNT) were synthesized by simple method using floating catalytic chemical vapor deposition technique. Prepared composites namely (LCNT and LCM) were treated with alkali and heated in an inert atmosphere to obtain LCNT-Alk and LCM-Alk. Nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm revealed the presence of abundant mesopores in LCNT-Alk. Highest surface area was obtained for LCNT-Alk (190.71 m2/g), with 80% of pores were found to be mesopores. Prepared composites were evaluated in dynamic conditions towards the removal Toluene, Ethylbenzene and O-Xylene (TEX). Higher capacities were observed for alkali treated composites and removal capacity of toluene surpassed other tested hydrocarbons. Removal capacity of Toluene by LCNT-Alk, LCM-Alk, LCNT and LCM were found to be 1820.8, 1092.5, 52.9 and 47.1 mg/g respectively. The results of the experimental dynamic adsorption of TEX on various prepared carbon composites were fitted into the Thomas models. Recyclability studies revealed that LCNT-Alk and LCM-Alk could be used for 5 adsorption-desorption without appreciable change in adsorption capacity. Thus, the prepared composites are promising candidate for the treatment of TEX and other organic contaminants as well.
