A laser-driven phosphor converted system with enhanced optical efficiency by using light-recycling dichroic filters

Laser-driven lighting has been considered as a high potential general lighting application according to its high luminous and pure chroma. However, the large optical reflective loss of the excitation blue laser on the phosphor converter interface decreases the optical efficiency seriously. In this w...

description Laser-driven lighting has been considered as a high potential general lighting application according to its high luminous and pure chroma. However, the large optical reflective loss of the excitation blue laser on the phosphor converter interface decreases the optical efficiency seriously. In this work, the dichroic filters were utilized to confine the blue laser inside the phosphor material and thereby improve the phosphor converted efficiency. The optical and thermal performances were experimentally investigated, respectively. The utilization of dichroic filters could greatly improve the optical efficiency of a laser-driven phosphor converter, approximately 1.8 times higher than the conventional converter. •The dichroic filters can restrict the blue laser rays inside the phosphor layer.•The reflected blue laser rays and scattered blue laser rays are greatly reduced.•The conversion efficiency of the phosphor converter is obviously enhanced.
