Description
Summary:Centrifugal pendulum vibration absorber (CPVA) is known to be a powerful device for attenuating the torsional vibrations in reciprocating or rotating machines. Circular path CPVA is the simplest to machine and is widely used but it often exhibits sudden jumps and hysteresis in the response of the torsional vibration of the rotor. We propose to incorporate the geometric nonlinear damping (GND) with the circular path CPVAs for the purpose of attenuating the torsional vibration of the rotor. The model system of the torsionally flexible rotor equipped with both CPVAs and GND devices is presented. We analyze the response behaviors of the steady states and their stabilities by using the averaging method. Our theoretical results reveal that the GND device plays the important role for removing the multistability of the steady state as well as the hysteresis phenomena. The GND is superior in removing multistability and enhancing the stability of the unison motion to the pendulum’s viscous damping in the sense that it works without decreasing the suppression performance of the torsional vibration. Action of GND makes it possible to extend the effective performance range as well as to get rid of the harmful multistability. •The geometric nonlinear damping (GND) is proposed to incorporate with the CPVA.•The GND plays the important role for removing the multistability of the steady state.•The GND is superior in enhancing the stability of the unison motion.•The GND works without degrading the suppression performance of the torsional vibration.
