description [Display omitted] •Er3+/Yb3+:CaTiO3 doped/co-doped phosphors are prepared with orthorhombic phase.•A highly intense green band with purity up to 100 % has been observed.•Effect of charge compensators on optical and thermal properties has been noticed.•Sensor sensitivity 0.00103 K−1 and high thermal stability has been achieved.•Phosphor is useful in lighting and hyperthermia-based cancer cell treatment. The structural and optical characterization of the CaTiO3: Er3+/Yb3+ phosphors prepared using conventional solid-state reaction method have been performed through XRD, FESEM, EDAX and diffuse reflectance analysis. The excitation, emission and upconversion (UC) emission studies have been done. The effect of co-doping with Li+/Na+ ions on the UC emission intensity and dynamics involved in the process have been studied. The temperature sensing ability, main cause of concentration quenching, thermal stability, photometric characterization and population redistribution ability have been discussed and the promising applications of the developed phosphors have been explored.
