Summary:[Display omitted] •Novel BiO2−x photocatalyst was successfully synthesized.•BiO2−x possesses typical hierarchical architecture and narrow band gap.•BiO2−x exhibits commendable activity and moderate stability. A novel visible light response BiO2−x photocatalyst was developed via a facile hydrothermal method, which was systematically characterized by multiple techniques. The photocatalytic activity was also evaluated by the degradation of MO under visible light irradiation. The results showed that BiO2−x possessed a typical hierarchical structure assembled by hexagonal platelets. It showed superb photocatalytic activity and moderate stability, suggesting promising potential application in environment treatment.
