Summary:•γ-Nb5Si3/NbC/NbSi2 composite has been obtained by SHS of Nb2O5-SiC-Al-Mg system.•The morphological distribution of phases of composite has been studied.•In the presence of carbon, γ-Nb5Si3 is formed, which is the Novotny phase.•The changes of crystal structure of phases after heating have been analyzed. Alumothermic self-propagating high-temperature synthesis was used for obtaining 2Nb-1Si-1C composite material. The morphology, structure and phase composition of the composite were studied by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that γ- Nb5Si3, NbC, NbSi2 phases were formed in the sample.
