Summary: | The fatigue life of a forging tool for brass ball production is shortened due to damage caused mainly by thermo-mechanical fatigue, together with abrasive and adhesive wear. The purpose of this research was to predict the fatigue life of a brass ball forging tool. A simulation of the forging process was conducted using finite element analysis in Abaqus. A further fatigue life prediction of the tool was carried out with results of the finite element analysis. The research shows that larger fatigue cracks, which cause tool failure, occur after 450,000 load cycles. Our findings correspond to real life circumstances where the tool is supposed to be able to withstand manufacture of up to 500,000 workpieces. |
