Description
Summary:Metal matrix composites (MMC’s) are used widely in several areas owing to its improved mechanical properties when compared with monolithic metals. Aluminum - Cenosphere composites are preferred in applications where components needs lower weight and higher strength. The proposed research work consists of fabrication of five different compositions of the Al7075 grade Aluminum - cenosphere composites following liquid metallurgy route. The specimens are prepared as per ASTM E8 for tensile test, ASTM E23 for impact test and ASTM G99 for sliding wear test experiments. The experiments revealed that the addition of cenosphere in the Aluminum alloy of grade 7075resulted in increase of the composite material hardness, tensile strength, impact strength, wear resistance and reduction in density. Further increase in the percent cenosphere beyond 7.5% resulted in marginal reduction in tensile strength, impact strength, and wear resistance of the composite material.
