Description
Summary:In this paper the effect of MMT nanoclay on the mechanical properties of Polylactic Acid (PLA)/Polycaprolactone (PCL) blends has been investigated. The PLA/PCL/clay composites were prepared by melt intercalation technique and the composites were characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM).The XRD results were showing the shifting of basal spacing occurred, when clay incorporated into polymer matrix. TEM micrographs reveal the development of agglomerates in the composites of 2% and 6% loading of clay. Based on the obtained mechanical properties results, addition of clay significantly enhances the strength and stiffness of PLA/PCL blends. DMA shows the addition of clay increase storage modulus and the presence of clay shift twoof blends become closer suggest that the presence of clay slightly compatibilizer the PLA/PCL blends. SEM micrographs revealed that the clay influence the miscibility of the blends. The PLA/PCL at 4% of clay grows more consistently and homogeneously in single phase morphology.
