Summary: | Fe(III) was used to crosslink gamma degraded chitosan leading to efficient bioadsorbent for fluoride ions. Degradation of chitosan with 30 kGy gamma dose before crosslinking was found to enhance adsorption capacity as compared to the unirradiated chitosan. Gamma degraded ferric crosslinked chitosan beads (γ-Fe-CTB) showed remarkable tendency of adsorption of fluoride ions. The composite was characterized using FT-IR, SEM-EDAX, TGA-DTA and BET studies. Various adsorption parameters were optimized. Under optimum conditions, γ-Fe-CTB showed fluoride adsorption capacity of 45.45 mg/g. The adsorption followed pseudo-second order kinetics in accordance with Freundlich isotherm. The process was found to be exothermic and spontaneous. |
