Summary: | Most of the rotating mechanical systems such as machine tools fail due to large response over its operation. This happens usually due to the resonance of the system. Growth in response due to the resonance is linear hence the system is lead to failure eventually. However, exponential growth is also seen in the case of mechanical systems. This is manifested by instability in the system. Instability is a commonly observed phenomenon in case of rotating machinery. This occurs mainly due to a time-varying parameter of a system. An asymmetric shaft is one of such mechanical components. In most of the machine tools such as lathe, milling, grinding machines, such asymmetric shaft are common. Elliptic shafts, shaft with key holes are some examples. In this work, an analytical framework is presented to obtain the instability operating range of asymmetric shaft mounded with a disc. Gyroscopic couple due to the disc mounted is also considered. |
