Description
Summary:This paper is aimed at analyzing the stresses of symmetric and asymmetric spur gears made of stainless steel matrix composites such as SS/TiC, SS/SiC and SS/TiB2. Finite element method is employed as the primary method followed in the paper effected by using CAD modelling software. The influence of gear type, gear material, and volume fraction of reinforcement on the stresses generated in the gears is observed. Various parameters related to stress analysis such as maximum principal stress, von-Mises stress, equivalent elastic strain, total deformation and shear stress were computed and tabulated. A comparative study between symmetric and asymmetric gears was also conducted and the results showed negligible difference in stresses induced between gears of various composites. Also, asymmetric gears were observed to perform better than symmetric gears when composite materials were used.
