Summary:At microscopic level a deeper understanding of the dislocation dynamics in sintered metals has not been yet investigated thoroughly which forms and important aspect of materials research. The current study presents the findings of certain experiments on the intermittent “electromagnetic radiation” (EMR) emission characteristics of sintered powder zinc, hexagonal close-packed (hcp) specimens during progressive deformation and strain hardening under quasi-static compression. The aspect ratio influences the distance between the apex of the two dead metal cones formed during compression, which in turn also affects the EMR emission. The crosshead speed (and hence strain rate) affects the EMR emission during axial compression. With axial compressive strain and cumulative strain energy, the EMR voltage and thus the EMR energy release rate grows parabolically. The EMR frequency increases almost linearly with axial compressive strain.
