Description
Summary:•Enzymatic synthesis of functionalized pyrroles in water is reported for the first time.•Metal catalysts and conventional column chromatography were not required.•Excellent yields of the products were obtained with good functional group tolerance. A lipase-catalyzed, mild and environmentally friendly synthesis of polyhydroxyalkyl pyrroles from various unprotected sugars, benzoylacetonitriles and NH4OAc/benzylamine in water was reported for the first time in this work. Moreover, the synthetic potentiality of this enzymatic method was demonstrated by easy isolation of the final products using filtration. This green synthesis and purification approach not only enriches the strategies for synthesis of polyhydroxyalkyl pyrroles, but also expands the application of lipase in organic synthesis.
