Summary: | ► Ternary composite materials based on collagen, collagen hydrolysate and hydroxyapatite were obtained. ► The addition of hydrolysate improves the compatibility between the organic and inorganic phases. ► The collagen hydrolysate was obtained by acidic hydrolysis at 125°C. ► The stronger interactions are due to the increasing number of free amino and carboxylate groups-peptide bond is hydrolyzed.
The aim of this study was to study the influence of collagen hydrolysate (HAS) on the formation of ternary collagen-hydrolysate/hydroxyapatite composite materials (COLL-HAS/HA). During the precipitation process of HA, a large amount of brushite is resulted at pH=7 but, practically pure HA is obtained at pH⩾8. The FTIR data reveal the duplication of the most important collagen absorption bands due to the presence of the collagen hydrolysate. The presence of collagen hydrolysate is beneficial for the management of bone and joint disorders such as osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. |
