Summary: | •Facile and green preparation of benzimidazoles.•Naked eye monitoring colorimetric and fluorescent sensors.•High selectivity and sensitivity.•DFT study and NCI analysis.
Two new fluorescent and colorimetric chemosensors based on benzimidazole derivatives (A, B) have been successfully synthesized through a facile and green catalytic reaction of ortho-phenylenediamine (O-PDA) and two different aldehydes in the presence of SBA-Pr-SO3H. These chemosensors used to the successive detection of Hg2+, Ag+, and CO32− ions. The stoichiometric ratio of sensors toward Ag+/CO32− ions for in the case of A was 2:1 and of Hg2+ B was 1:1. Both A and B probes have shown rapid and short response times (1 min). Furthermore, the optimized structures, binding mechanisms, and electronic transitions were supported with a high correlation and agreement by spectroscopy, DFT and NCI calculations
