Description
Summary:A well-defined heterojunction of cobalt oxide and zinc oxide (Co3O4/ZnO) was synthesized using different concentrations (2 and 4 wt%) of chitosan (CS) with a fixed amount (3 wt%) of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) via co-precipitation method. The addition of CS and PVP increased the specific surface area and reduced the charge recombination rate of Co3O4/ZnO, declaring it a promising material for catalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) dye and has antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria. Numerous characterizations were conducted to elucidate the structural, optical, and compositional properties of prepared NCs. The XRD pattern endorsed the cubic and hexagonal structure of Co3O4/ZnO, and the calculated crystallite size (14.62 nm) of Co3O4/ZnO and decreased (14.62–13.14 nm) with CS and PVP. FTIR spectra display the stretching and vibrational bending modes of Co-O, and Zn-O. SAED analysis validated the polycrystalline nature of Co3O4/ZnO. UV-Vis spectra of Co3O4/ZnO showed a blue shift with the inclusion of CS and PVP, consistent with an increase in bandgap energy (Eg). Additionally, 4 wt% CS/PVP-Co3O4/ZnO exhibited maximum dye degradation (83.33 %) in neutral medium and antibacterial activity (7.75 mm) against S. aureus. The bactericidal action of CS/PVP-Co3O4/ZnO nanocomposite (NCs) was confirmed by molecular docking, demonstrating inhibition of tyrosyl-tRNA synthetase (TyrRS) and DNA gyrase against S. aureus.
