Summary:In this work we investigate some properties of the residual activity induced by protons impinging on quartz, mylar and other insulating materials. In particular, we discuss the time constant related to the decay of the emitted radiation after the primary ion beam is turned off. This radiation includes a continuum of bremsstrahlung and, in some cases, characteristic X-rays induced in the process as well. In general, the results indicate the presence of two time constants in the decaying process. Moreover, it appears that the residual activity has a strong dependence on the material specifications and on the conditions of the surface under bombardment. A simple mechanism for this process is suggested.
