Description
Summary:The aims of this study were to identify the characteristics of low back pain and its effects on quality of life in patients with neuromuscular diseases. A hundred ten patients with various types of Neuromuscular diseases, who applied to a neurological rehabilitation outpatient clinic, were included to this prospective study. Patients were divided into two groups according to having low back pain or no low back pain. After noted the charactheristics of the diseases, Pain evaluation (severity, quality and localization) and Nottingham health profile were applied to the patients. 29 patients suffering from low back pain and 81 patients having no low back pain. The mean age of patients with having pain were 32.27 ± 12.38; whereas having no pain 28.76 ± 11.17 years. There was a significant difference between sub-parameters of HRQOL, ‘pain’ and ‘sleep but not the total score of HRQOL between the groups ( p < 0.05). Also there was a significant difference between the durations of the disease ( p < 0.05). Low back pain was found to be correlated BMI ( r = −0.230) ( p < 0.05) and higher in women ( p < 0.05). In no low back pain group, 40 patients suffers from pain in another region of the body. Pain is a secondary problem in NMD and needs to be better characterized in this population. The physiotherapists who study NMD must take into acount the low back pain assessment and treatment options for improving the HRQoL.
