Description
Summary:This paper presents a comprehensive analytical model to study the effect of ovality on the dynamic responses of the buried offshore oval lined-pipeline system subjected to strike-slip fault. A refined displacement function is introduced to describe the transverse displacement of the system. The yield displacement, as well as the axial strain, may be accurately predicted by applying the classical beam yield theory and the static equilibrium method. Consequently, a finite element model is developed to simulate the mechanical behavior of the buried oval lined-pipeline system subjected to strike-slip. The accuracy of the present methodology is verified by other analytical and experimental results. Good agreement is achieved between the present methodology and other results. Then, evaluations focus on examining the impact of some parameters on the displacement and strains of the deformed system. These parameters are the thickness ratio between the liner and pipeline, the different ovalities of the system, fault inclination angles, yield strength of the liner, soil properties, etc. Finally, it is found that the orthogonal ovality (φ=0°) is beneficial to resist the strike-slip fault, and the non-orthogonal ovality (φ=90°) is unbeneficial to resist the strike-slip fault, respectively. The present predictions offer a preliminary design for the oval lined-pipeline system under strike-slip fault. •The dynamic performance is studied on the oval lined-pipeline system.•An S-shape is used to describe the deformation of the oval system.•Explicit predictions are derived to describe the yield displacements and strains.•The orthogonal ovality is helpful for the lined-pipeline to resist the strike-slip fault.
