Summary: | Abstract Like most places across the world, the maternity service in the UK has evolved into one which offers limited choice to women regarding the place of delivery. In a rural setting, adequate provision of maternity care, antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal, relies heavily on community services and in particular, the support of free-standing midwife-led units. This article outlines the evolution of these units, and the industry required to maintain them in the light of changing healthcare. |
