Description
Summary:Myiasis is a term derived from the Greek myia or fly to define a disease caused by an infestation with dipterous larvae. A homeless male patient disoriented (with probable neurologic impairment) and without any identifying information, was referred to an urgency and emergency hospital service presenting extensive area of larvae infestation, which covered the entire region of the lower lip. The immediate treatment consisted of debridement of the lesion, with the removal of larvae and necrotic areas. Part of the larvae was sent for parasitologic analysis. Due to the extension of the lesion and the firm consistency of the remaining tissue, an incisional biopsy was performed to investigate for a neoplastic lesion. Histopathologic analysis revealed a nonspecific chronic inflammatory process, with acute areas. Parasitologic analysis revealed the larvae of Cochliomyia hominivorax, which develop exclusively in living hosts. After the surgical procedure, the patient awaits lip reconstruction and further plastic surgery of the area.
