Summary: | Paracoccidioidomycosis is a systemic fungal infection that can affect an oral mucosa. A 75-year-old male patient who was a farmer, smoker, and drinker had complaint of injury in the mouth that did not regress and caused pain. He had no systemic or extraoral changes. At the intraoral examination a reddish nodule with firm consistency measuring 1.0 × 1.0 × 0.3 cm was observed on the anterior hard palate. An incisional biopsy was performed, and chest x-ray was requested. Histopathologic examination confirmed a first clinical case of oral paracoccidioidomycosis, and the chest image showed lungs changes compatible with deep fungal infection. The patient was refereed to an infectious disease physician who prescribed antifungal treatment, and he appeared to be well after treatment, which was seen during his follow-up with a stomatologist. This fact illustrates the importance of a professional stomatologist in the diagnosis of deep fungal infections. |
