Summary: | Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a malignant clonal disorder characterized by heterogeneous immature myeloblasts, usually in the bone marrow of adults. Oral manifestations may be the first signs of AML and the recognition of these alterations is fundamental for the early diagnosis and a better prognosis of this neoplasm. In this case, a 23-year-old female patient started with severe pain, ulcers and swelling of the gums. Endodontic urgency was performed on teeth 23 and 24 and exacerbation of the pain, abscesses and spontaneous gingival bleeding were observed. The patient underwent incisional biopsy of the gingiva and serologic and hematological examinations. The serologic tests were negative; however, the hematological results presented altered values, which led to the suspicion of acute lymphoid leukemia diagnosis. The immunophenotyping of the bone marrow was performed and the diagnosis was AML. The patient underwent chemotherapy and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. |
