Description
Summary:Objective: To investigate the efficacy of ethanolamine oleate (EO) therapy in a series of cases of oral vascular malformations (OVMs). Study Design: Data regarding age, sex, location, size, symptomatology, treatment, and outcomes were collected on patients. All patients were diagnosed according to the classification of International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies and received the same treatment protocol (EO 0.05 g/mL), according to size of the lesion. Results: Thirty patients were treated. Most were female (66.7%) aged 9 to 88 years (median, 56.2 years). The inferior lip (56.7%) was the most affected site followed by the buccal mucosa (20.0%). Approximately 83% of lesions were asymptomatic, and 50% were ≤ 0.9 cm in size. In 43.3% of the patients, only 1 application of EO was necessary. Complete regression occurred in 53.3% of cases, whereas 33.3% showed partial regression. One patient showed hypersensitivity during treatment. There was a significant difference between clinical outcome and lesion size (P = .044). Conclusion: Sclerotherapy with EO is an acceptable, effective, and affordable treatment and can provide satisfactory results in OVMs of various sizes, especially where other treatment options could compromise the aesthetic aspects.
