CONGENITAL HAIRY POLYP ASSOCIATED WITH TERATOMA IN A NEWBORN WITH HYDROCEPHALUS: A RARE CASE REPORT

Summary: | Congenital tumors in the oral cavity are rare. Among these, hairy polyps (HP) are benign lesions containing elements of ectodermal and mesodermal origin, whereas oral teratomas (OT) include all 3 germ cell layers. We present a 21-day-old female newborn, diagnosed with hydrocephalus and severe right ventriculomegaly, showing a polyp-like lesion in the oral cavity, associated with feeding and breathing difficulties. Computed tomography confirmed the presence of a large pedunculated mass, measuring 3.6 × 1.5 × 1.1 cm, arising in the soft palate, obstructing the oropharynx. Histopathologic examination showed central mature adipose tissue, hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and neurovascular structures, lined by stratified squamous keratinized epithelium, in the nodule region compatible with HP. We also found the presence of cartilaginous, glandular, lymphatic proliferation, osseous and immature myxoid tissue, confirming an associated OT. The lesion was removed surgically, and the patient remains in intensive care because of systemic complications. |
