Summary: | The present study aims to carry out a bibliographic review regarding oral changes resulting from electronic cigarette smoking.
The PubMed database was researched with the following uniterms and Boolean operators: “electronic cigarette” OR “e-cigarette” OR “electronic cigarettes” AND “oral health” from January 2015 to January 2020. Additionally, books and epidemiologic data were used. The inclusion criteria included articles published in Portuguese and/or English that met the theme proposed by the study. Nonsystematic literature reviews and articles that did not strictly refer to electronic cigarettes were excluded.
The final sample consisted of 14 articles, of which 7.14% were classified as a systematic review (n = 1), 78.57% as in vivo studies (n = 11), 7.14% as a case control study (n = 1), and 7.14% as a pilot study (n = 1).
There was a low level of published evidence on the results of oral health. The effects mentioned suggested periodontal changes and cellular damage in oral tissues. In addition, electronic cigarette smoking has not demonstrated full health security. |
