Description
Summary:The modal properties of microstructured optical fibers formed by systems of capillaries packed closely inside round cavities are analyzed. With the aid of a new rigorous boundary value method based on integral equations the dispersion, confinement losses and field distributions of modes of these fibers are determined. It is shown that intercapillary holes strongly affect the modes allowing a successful combination of tight mode confinement with low confinement losses and zero group velocity dispersion to be obtained.
