Summary:This paper concludes the results of the aperture averaged scintillation, mean signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and average bit error rate (BER) for the sinh-Gaussian vortex beams propagating in turbulent atmosphere. The influences of the parameters for the sinh-Gaussian vortex beams on the aperture averaged scintillation, mean SNR and average BER have been analyzed, using numerical calculations. The comparative study between the sinh-Gaussian beam and the sinh-Gaussian vortex beam is made under the same condition. •The aperture averaged scintillation of sinh-Gaussian vortex beams is investigated.•The performance of the sinh-Gaussian vortex beam as communication link is studied.•How parameters of beams affect scintillation, mean SNR and average BER is analyzed.•Make a comparative study between sinh-Gaussian beam and sinh-Gaussian vortex beam.
