Summary: | The formation of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) on chemically vapour deposited diamond upon femtosecond laser processing changes the optical properties of the sample and induces a strong colouration of the surface. A Yb doped fibre laser with central wavelength λ=1030nm, repetition rate f=200 kHz and τ=270 fs pulses was used in the experiments. We study topography, Raman and reflection spectra of the surface structures. The observed LIPSS period and the Raman spectra indicate the formation of a graphite layer on the diamond surface during laser processing, possibly highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG).
•Femtosecond laser processing of CVD diamond surfaces is studied.•Laser-induced periodic surface structures LIPSS induce structural colours on diamonds.•Colours are weakly angle dependent due to the hierarchical structures.•Graphite layer is also formed on the surface. |
