Summary:The federal decriminalization of marijuana is enjoying a renaissance; Congress has currently delayed a vote on a bill to remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act. However, poised to legalize medical marijuana, many states will see an appreciable rise in the availability of cannabis products resulting in widespread use among patients within the perioperative setting. What is best practice to care for such patients remains elusive, although the list of therapeutic benefits of cannabis continues to grow. As we learn more by way of growing acceptance in the political and scientific realms, this summary serves as an appraisal to perioperative clinicians of the various subtleties of cannabis use by patients presenting for operative procedures.
