Summary:Polymeric and binuclear complexes with the dodecahydro-closo-dodecaborate anion as bridging ligand and terminal bipyridylamine molecules were synthesized by varying reaction conditions. [Display omitted] The mixed-ligand silver(I) complexes [Ag2(bpa)2[B12H12]]n (1), [Ag2(bpa)2[B12H12]]·2DMF (3·2DMF), and [Ag2(Ph3P)2(bpa)2[B12H12]] (4) are synthesized and characterized by IR-spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. It is found that the polymeric 1 and binuclear 3 complexes are selectively formed in acetonitrile and DMF solutions, respectively. The addition of Ph3P prevents polymerization in acetonitrile and affords binuclear complex 4 in both solvents. Possible mechanisms of the complexation reactions are discussed.
