Summary: | Water and oxygen are the main media for corrosion of metal materials. Developing oxygen-consuming coatings is an effective way to improve the corrosion resistance of coatings. Polyfurfuryl alcohol (PFA) can react in air and is considered as a promising bio-based material to partially replace petroleum-based materials. In this work, PFA/epoxy anti-corrosion composite coatings were prepared. Water absorption and other test results showed that PFA had good hydrophobicity, good compatibility with epoxy resin, and can react with oxygen slowly for further crosslinking. Corrosion tests showed that the PFA/epoxy composite coatings had superior corrosion resistance compared to pure epoxy coatings. And EP50 had the best anti-corrosion performance. The total percentage of PFA in the composite coating could be up to 37.5 wt%. The |Z|f=0.01 Hz value of the coating was still as high as 1011 after 80 days of immersion in 5.0 wt% NaCl solution at 55 °C. This study confirms that as a multifunctional bio-based material, PFA has broad application prospects in the field of anticorrosive coatings.
•PFA had good compatibility with epoxy coatings and was uniformly dispersed in the coatings.•The addition of PFA improved the hydrophobicity of the epoxy composite coating.•The addition of PFA increased the impedance modulus value of the epoxy coating and improved the anti-corrosion performance.•PFA can react with oxygen, reducing the permeation rate of corrosive medium.•The nanoparticles inside the coating can prevent the expansion of cracks in the coating. |
