New algorithm to calculate the cutter location points (CL) optimizing the chordal tolerance for 2 ½ axis milling of free form surfaces

Description
Summary:Even though the high order polynomial can be used to describe a free form tool path for CNC milling, traditional linear interpolation (G01) is the most used today. As investigated in a previous work, different CAM systems calculate different points (CC) to mill the same surface under the same tolerance and cutting conditions. The current work presents a new approach to generate NC codes optimizing the use of the chordal tolerance for 2½ milling. The experimental results shown that the NC codes generated by the proposed method reduced in about 60% the milling time by reducing the CC points, without losing the accuracy.
