Description
Summary:Chatter phenomenon is usually observed on several machining processes, leading to both poor quality surface and cutting edge chipping. In order to avoid it, this work present one innovative solution: a tool holder fulfilled with a shape memory alloy; these smart materials are being considered as good passive dampers in the construction industry. A comparison between the performance of a commercial tool holder and our proposal in terms of surface integrity was held considering shoulder milling operation of a medium carbon steel. Numerical and experimental results shown that this alternative may be very useful depending on cutting speed employed.
