Summary:The Open innovation (OI) paradigm represents an organizational innovation that can enable manufacturing firms (including those operating in mature industries) and the industry itself to structure their innovation processes more effectively and efficiently, significantly reducing the cost, time, and thus the risk of innovation. Based on these considerations, this paper discusses the topic of OI in manufacturing. Through a systematic and bibliometric literature review, we retrieved from the Scopus database 331 articles published in the major academic journals referenced in the database. The article outlines the evolution of the topic based on publications by year, type of document, country, subject area, source, author, and through a keyword analysis. The results provide a clear picture of the existing literature to identify gaps in current scientific research and propose a future research agenda.
