Description
Summary:The lag time which fire plume flows from the fire origin at the ignition time to the location of interest on the ceiling where the first heat gas front reaches is important for the activation of a fire detector, especially for the early fire detection in an aircraft cargo compartment. This lag time of a fire plume was measured in a simulated aircraft cargo compartment at four atmospheric pressures (100 kPa, 90 kPa, 80 kPa, 70 kPa). Results showed that the heat release rate is the major factor in the determination of the lag time, while the ambient pressure can also have a slight effect on it. Based on Alpert’s theory and our experiments, a new correlation predicting the lag time of a fire plume has been developed in an air craft cargo compartment.
