Description
Summary:This paper provides an in-depth analysis of cylindrical shells subjected to combined loading, specifically axial load and external pressure, with a focus on their application in floating offshore wind turbines (FOWT). The study surveys the assessment of the ultimate strength of these cylindrical shells through a comprehensive approach that integrates a simple design formula, numerical simulations, and experimental works. In most cases, experimental investigations are conducted as primary validation to substantiate the numerical analysis and refine the accuracy of the design formula. The outcomes of this study yield a comprehensive benchmark to investigate the behavior of the floating structure in upcoming works. The insights gleaned from the research can be harnessed to refine the design and evaluation processes of FOWT, consequently elevating their reliability and overall performance.
