Summary: | Oil spill pollution is a leading problem that has worsened over the years with the constant increase in maritime traffic. However, there is a significant lack of knowledge about this type of pollution and its impacts on aquatic ecosystems in Morocco, which poses a threat to the marine organisms, the environment and human health. Based on extensive research, the country has experienced numerous oil spills. Faced with this situation, the management of oil pollution in Moroccan marine ecosystems is essential to mitigate its negative impacts by implementing different strategies, including prevention, containment and clean-up. This management requires collaborative effort between different stakeholders, including governments, industry and the public, to protect marine environment and its inhabitants. This study is the first review to focus on oil spill pollution in Morocco, and provides an overview of this contamination, its effects, abundance, distribution, as well as tools and strategies adopted for contaminant remediation.
