Description
Summary:An integrated single-pot double divided wall column (DDWC) process is designed for separating acetonitrile, ethanol and water into its constituent pure components using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as the homogenous extractive entrainer. Comparison with the recently reported side-stream extractive distillation (SSED) design with three columns shows the single-pot process to be more cost-effective and energy-efficient. The SSED process has a Total Annualized Cost (TAC) that is higher by 9.91% and an energy consumption that is higher by 7.27%. Also, a decentralized temperature inferential control system is shown to effectively reject large throughput and moderate feed composition changes to establish the controllability of the proposed design. The developed single-pot process is thus a promising alternative, particularly for space-constrained production facilities.
