Summary: | A port's strategic involvement in regional development requires a better understanding due to its importance in enhancing the emerging geo-dimensional role. This study explores a suitable strategic approach for port's involvement in regional development by embarking on the Australian regional ports (ARPs) and by adopting a mixed-method (MM) research approach. For obtaining an in-depth research insight, the mixed-method research approach proves to be a useful tool, though seldom practiced in maritime studies. The paper emphasises the mixing points of this mixed-method research approach. The findings advocate a place-based strategic approach for ports that is conducive to the emerging geo-dimensional ‘regional enabler’ role of ports. To strategize this ‘regional enabler’ role, port sustainability appears as one focus, while the other focus can be kept on gaining competitive advantages through the port's participation in regional resource configuration and regional innovation system. This bi-focal place-based strategic approach forms the critical conduit for ports' strategic involvement in regional development.
•Ports' geo-dimensional, regional enabler role is emerging rapidly.•Port's involvement in regional development (RD) demands systematic investigation.•A mixed-method research suits framing Australian Regional Ports (ARP)’ RD strategy.•A place-based bi-focal strategic approach is conducive to ARPs' involvement in RD.•Port sustainability & participation in regional innovation systems arise as focus. |
